Home | Story of change

Mr. Reji, aged 36, is a smallholder farmer in Kattapana, Idukki. He is cultivating coffee, tea, cardamom, banana, nutmeg and clove in his 3.65 acres of land. Among these crops, coffee and cardamom occupy the major portion of his field and he is producing an average yield of 1000 kg coffee berries.

Good Agricultural Practices
At the early phase of STEPS project, the Prakruthi field team conducted a Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) audit in his field. Empty containers of crop protection products and fertilizers bags were noticeable in his cultivating land. Even though he is a good farmer, he was not aware of proper management practices and proper use of chemical fertilizers and crop protection products. Neither did he maintain any farm documentation nor administration.

Training and actions
After the ‘GAP’ audit, Mr. Reji attended various group trainings, including Integrated Nutrition Management, Integrated Pest Management, Health and Safety and farm diary documentation training. As a result of these trainings and visits of the groups’ lead farmer, polythene bags and other plastic products are collected and disposed in a pit. He quit the use of hazardous and banned chemicals to all his crops. While applying chemicals, he is using safety equipments.

Mr. Reji proudly comments: “Now I am applying only minimal and needful crop protection products to my cardamom, tea and banana crops. I spend less money and take care of my health. For my families’ safety, I am planning to build a separate and suitable storage facility for my chemical fertilizers and crop protection products.”
