Prakruthi – Educating and Enabling to Empower

Prakruthi, a Bangalore-based non-profit organisation established in 1991, envisages a society where the economic and social divide created by a non-egalitarian system is minimised. In attempting to do this, Prakruthi works with the poor and the marginalised in various sectors of Indian economy such as the plantation workers, small and marginal farmers, women, youth and children. We have adopted the strategy of linking the corporate world and communities of people in trying to achieve our stated mission.

Beginning with a preferential option for children in 1991 we have traversed a long way to embrace social responsibility as a mission, in its manifestations at the community and corporate level.

In the new millennium we have taken a conscious shift to address issues raised by liberalisation, privatization and globalization. Pursuing this paradigm shift today Prakruthi’s programs and projects are focused on linking deprived grassroots communities with the emerging new opportunities in a globalised world.

Current program Thrusts

  • Community-centred Corporate Social Responsibility
  • Community  Enablement
  • Youth & Child Empowerment
  • Empowerment through Cultural Expressions.

These program thrust areas are centred around educating, empowering, and enabling communities.

Community-Centred Corporate Social Responsibility strives to bring together multi-stakeholder groups in various forums to educate and empower them to work together for common goals. Collective bargaining, fair trade and environmentally responsible common goals in the tea, coffee, cotton farming sectors form the core content of this thrust area.

Community Enablement focuses on bringing together various grassroots groups to prepare them to meet challenges posed by market focuses in a neo-liberalized situation. Small growers and farm workers in the coffee and tea sectors along with cotton farmers are the primary target groups.

Youth &Child Empowerment is about enabling children and youth to meet the challenges of tomorrow by arming them with skills to combat the digital divide. They are organised into clubs and associations to leverage the advantages offered by technology. Linking with corporate for their employment is an integral component of this thrust area.

Empowerment through Cultural Expressions is a unique program which addresses the areas of performing and fine arts. Affirming that holistic development of the individual includes cultural and spiritual dimensions, Prakruthi provides platforms for youth and children to refine and express their latent potential in areas of dance, music, drama, painting and such other forms.

Work Area

Specifically we work with big and small corporate houses, particularly in the Information Technology sector; farmers and farm workers; Trade Unions; NGOs and CSOs; and children and youth.

Prakruthi has its registered office in Bangalore and runs the Prakruthi Learning Centre in Byrathi, a village on the outskirts of Bangalore. It has a field office in Utnoor in Andhra Pradesh to cater to the community development and empowerment programmes of small cotton growers and farmers in that region. It also has liaison and network stations in Kottagiri (Tamil Nadu) and Kodagu (Karnataka) to work with tea and coffee plantation workers respectively.
