Introduction
Prakruthi have been working extensively with the small and medium farmers in the cotton sector. The effort is to motivate them to take up organic faming and adopt a friendly attitude to nature, and at the same time, ensuring better prices for organically-grown cotton. Awareness-building on the merits and advantages of organic faming is the key component. The work among cotton farmers is centered in one of the most backward districts of Andhrapradesh, Adilabad, which has a high density of Tribe’s living in the interior villages and whose livelihood solely depend on agriculture. Recently, the work is extended to the neighbouring states of Orissa and Maharashtra.
Farmers were organized into groups under the umbrella of Mutually-Aided Cooperative Society (MCAS) and federated in an apex body of organic farmers known as COFA (Chetna Organic Farmers Association)
Achievements
In order to supplement farmer’s income during the change-over period from fertilizer-intensive methods to organic farming; we have promoted alternative ways and means of livelihood sources for these farmers. Cattle-rearing and dairying has been promoted as a part of farming. Obtaining the organic manure necessary for the farms is an additional advantage of this activity.
